Grain free food enhanced with a unique superfood blend

Superfoods do not have a formal scientific or legal definition, but they are increasingly gaining wider recognition as foods that are rich in certain compounds, such as antioxidants, that may have benefits to our own health and that of our pets. The term is more than 100 years old, so the concept of healthful eating is perhaps not such a modern idea as you might think, although nutritional science has certainly developed since then! [Harvard, 2021].

The Arden Grange Superfood Blend comprises 10 natural ingredients with health benefits – sweet potato, coconut oil, spirulina, chia seeds and dark-skinned fruits & berries.

They all share powerful, antioxidant properties. A diverse selection of ingredients make up the Arden Grange Superfood Blend because antioxidants are not interchangeable, and many differ in both their site of action and mechanism. Their unique chemical behaviours and biological properties mean that one substance cannot do all of the work alone. The body produces its own antioxidants, but many of those found in plants cannot be manufactured.

Free radicals, oxidation, oxidative stress and the role of antioxidants

Food provides raw energy, but it needs to be converted to ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to provide energy that the body can use. This energy is generated through the movement of electrons which takes place in the cells via reactions called oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gaining electrons).

Free radicals are by-products of this normal and necessary process, and they are also produced after exercise, exposure to stress, infection, pollutants, and the sun. Their purpose is to help fight infection and repair muscle tissue after physical activity, but if their numbers exceed those of antioxidants, oxidative stress occurs - this can damage the cells and DNA, leading on to disease and premature ageing.

Free radicals steal electrons from stable molecules, which then become free radicals themselves and continue the chain reaction. Antioxidants have lots of electrons and donate them to unstable molecules helping to restore the balance.

Get started with grain free

Our precious pups rely on us to give them the care they need and deserve, and part of that care involves making the right choices. Which can involve big decisions, such as what they eat!

Food sensitivity?

Like their owners, dogs can experience sensitive skin and digestion. While this could be a stand-alone or seasonal condition, symptoms can sometimes be caused by an allergy or intolerance to an ingredient in their food. By leaving these issues unmanaged your dog can experience a ‘ruff-time’.

Superfood & health

The benefits of adding superfoods to our diets are increasingly gaining recognition. Rich in certain compounds, these foods hold powerful potential to boost our health and that of our pets.

Chia seeds do absorb a lot of moisture, so should not be fed in large quantities in their raw seed form. The small quantity present in these recipes in a processed form is very safe (but as with feeding any dry dog food, ensure plenty of fresh drinking water is available).

Yes, they are included in a concentrated, dry form.

12kg bag – 36g of extracts/dried fruits equates to 1.76kg of fresh
2kg bag – 6g of extracts/dried fruits equates to 293g of fresh

The Superfood Blend has many benefits that we feel will significantly enhance the Sensitive recipes. Puppies post-weaning are particularly vulnerable to infection whilst their immunity continues to develop. Starting antioxidant support at a young age can result in a stronger adult immune system, and pregnant bitches may attain better birth outcomes. Antioxidant support is better started before a dog reaches senior status, and can improve fitness levels, defence against disease and ageing. Adult dogs that are sensitive, working, sporting or anxious will profit the most, but all adult dogs can reap the benefits of the Superfood Blend. Extra support is important for overweight dogs because the excessive expansion of white adipose tissue during obesity triggers complex and multifactorial conditions of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Seniors can benefit from more support too as older dogs can be prone to age-related conditions including macular degeneration, dementia, mobility issues, dental problems and heart disease.

Cassava produces cyanide, but this is only problematic if the ingredient is not prepared correctly; this is subsequently controlled very well during production.

It is destroyed by sunlight, which is why the tapioca chips are dried by the sun and not using ovens.

It is an ideal alternative to white potato, and the fact it is comprised mostly of starch is a benefit (in that it is a very low allergen ingredient - food allergies are adverse immune reactions to proteins); it contains resistant starch (which acts like soluble fibre) helping feed the healthy gut bacteria; it's also great form/structure/mouth-feel.

A small quantity of peas in conjunction with other ingredients in a well-researched recipe that supplies optimal amino acids, vitamins and minerals is beneficial.

For owners that require their dogs to eat a grain free diet without legumes, the sensitive range may be suitable.

Our chicken oil is rarely associated with adverse food reactions because it is filtered to remove large antigenic protein molecules (a food allergy is an adverse immune reaction to a dietary protein rather than a fat). Intolerances (where the immune system is not directly involved) are a little different, but as these are more likely to arise in response to less digestible and/or ingredients present at a very high level, the chicken oil inclusion is again rarely problematic. Chicken oil is a highly digestible energy source and supplies Omega-6 Arachidonic Acid (important for a healthy brain, skin, coat, metabolism and reproductive system) and vitamin D.

Yes! Carry out a gradual introduction when a new food is initially introduced and don't introduce more than one at a time for sensitive dogs.
